Assignment 4 Thomas Kenny

This picture was taken at Tiananmen Square, China during a protest for democracy in 1989. In response to the protests, the Chinese government sent military personal and materiel to suppress the crowds. The man in the picture was so passionate about democracy that he refused to let the tanks continue down the road, even moving to block the tanks from going around him. This image is the definition of courage, as this man is staring certain death in the face in order to protect the ideals that he cherishes. Seeing as how there were between 200 and 2000 fatalities as a result of the protests, the Chinese were not afraid of killing their own citizens. This picture illustrates the classic David versus Goliath scene, but in a very real setting with tangible consequences. These circumstances make the man’s act of valor extraordinary.
