Technology is its own category in today's world. When discussing historical patterns, it's easy to group technology with other things, or to dismiss it. But it has become such a vital aspect of contemporary society, and that has both positive and negative consequences. Obviously, it's a great asset in many facets of human activity. The government relies on it. Intellectual ideas are more easily spread throughout the world. Connections are established among people of different cultures with ease, etc. You could list these for days. The question, though, is if this rapid technological development and focus has hurt us.
Of course our generation is different from the last. Change is a constant. We no longer send Christmas cards, but instead update a Facebook status. But is different necessarily better or worse? It's just different. Our vocabulary may be lost on an older generation, but we can communicate faster and with more people than ever before. Let's just hope robots don't take over.
