Assignment 4: A World in Pictures -Keionna Bailey

Hurricane Katrina Damage

In late August, early September of 2005, it's hard to think that I was probably the happiest kid on earth enjoying my birthday while half of the country was in turmoil.

Hurricane Katrina devastated the United States in 2005. Was this inevitable? Did we know enough before hand to evacuate the city of New Orleans and part of Mississippi? I don't know. There were over a thousand deaths in Louisiana and Two-Hundred in Mississippi. Although there were close to two thousand deaths overall, over a million suffered. Some were still missing and their loved ones couldn't reach them nor were they able to save them. Some sought shelter but even that wasn't enough considering 80% of  New Orleans was under water. Hurricane Katrina wasn't predicted to be as dangerous as it was. And some blamed President Bush for this, some even claimed that he knew of the hurricane's severity and did nothing about it.

Hurricane Katrina progressed from a category 3 hurricane to a category 5 and the New Orleans mayor at the time, RayNagin, took different measures to evacuate the city but not enough wasn't done. Maybe we could have prepared more for Katrina but our country knows a bit about working together. In 2001 although the there weren't as many fatalities the hit of the world trade center might have shaken us but we weren't broken. It's the situations like these where our country is able to work together as the UNITED states, and care for one another.
