Assignment 19: plastics-Mia Alexander

I take what people say to heart. Any time my parents or someone close to me tells me something, I tend to remember it (if it's relevant or just funny at the time). That is not to say that I follow their advice, I simply store it. I noticed one day that I have never known how to shop by myself, mostly because my mom has always done it for me. As I step into that new found independence stage of my final teen years, I have had to do things like that: grocery shop, alone.
One thing that came to my mind and comes to my mind any time we buy eggs is my mom telling me to open the carton up and check to see if any of the eggs are broken. Wow, never thought of that! Thanks to previous English courses, I found the tip actually applied to life in a more metaphorical sense, don't trust what you see at first, look beneath the surface. Yes, that idea has stuck with me but one piece of advice I know I will never let go of is to respect my mom no matter what. It's a rule but it is also advice that my grandma has perpetually instilled in me. My mother is the best. She annoys me half the time but she puts up with a lot. The advice has really made me reflect on how I treat my mother, seeing as a I am a product of her. Also, I have paid better attention to how respectful I am to other adults because it all starts at home. 90% of the adults I talk to claim that children of my generation and following ones, have no respect. True or not, I have begun to understand the necessity  of it in life. Say, I am beyond disrespectful to my mom, who's blood, why would I treat my teachers or any other adult not related to me, any better? How would I hold down a job? All these things I think about whenever I go back to that advice. So, it has made me more insightful and aware of how I treat my elders and people in general and I will carry it with me into college.
