I love how you taught to the test. That was very effective and it made us prepared for the test because we were so familiar with the test format. The individual groups grading essays was not very effective in my mind because most people never really read the essays and so there wasn't any constructive feedback. To me although the class discussion takes longer it's great because there is chance to really understand myself as a writer and lets me know what I need to work on. Also your advice on how to approach certain prompts was useful as well.
The one thing that I felt like i never really had a chance to develop was my analysis skills. I needed more than just essay writing and socratic seminar. I think that you should try to incorporate the 50 essays book into the analysis section, but instead of making it formalized just have the students read it overnight or in class and discuss it and give tips on how to approach analyzing the material. The socratic seminars also weren't that effective for me because I was more concentrated on the length requirement than actually analyzing the text.
It was good how you didn't rely on textbooks as much as other teachers. Textbooks only cause students to lose interest and i think you did a good job of keeping a balance between the use of the textbook and outside resources. If you incorporated current events within the curriculum i think that would be a valuable asset to the class because it will give students the chance to create an argument and there's also room for analysis.
The PSA final project is very interesting and you should definitely keep it but I think you should also allow us to do mini PSAs throughout the year so we can familiarize ourselves with video production and skills.
