Being in the English class this year, I learned what the
term, “teaching the test” truly means. None
of this represents any personal resentment towards Mr. Logsdon because I understand
that he has little to no choice about what he teaches, since his class is
specifically designed to end with a big test at the end of the year that
literally measures student and teacher success. Even though we did many things other than take
practice tests and write essays this year, that was what stuck in my memory the
most. I think back to the meticulous grading of essays every couple of weeks
and notice that I spent the entire year simply learning the format of a test I didn’t
even take. I suppose it would’ve seemed more productive to someone that
actually took the AP test, but to someone for whom the AP test meant nothing,
the (seemingly) endless cycle of essay writing and test-teaching was a chore.
