Whenever he notices something
convenient in today’s world, my father has a habit of giving me his “when I was
a boy’” speech. He would first explain
the benefit of having a certain piece of technology, then move on to what his
16 year old self had instead, and then conclude with how our lives differ
because of it. From this, I feel as though I have a general idea of what life
would be like several decades before my birth. But in fact, although I may know
the facts, I have never had the experiences that my father had, and will never
truly know what it is like to live during the years when he was an adolescent.
Despite this, I still feel “old-fashioned”
in that I don’t use social networking services, and don’t like to have a
relationship with someone that is exclusively through text. This doesn’t mean
that I don’t use text as a medium of communication, but I do feel truly disappointed
when I have a friend with which whom I don’t have a choice but to talk almost
exclusively through texting, due to geographical or schedule-related conflicts.
If asked to choose one, I think I’d probably choose present day over the
decades in which my father grew up. This however does not mean that I don’t sometimes
wish I could’ve grown up in simpler times.
