My life would be much more isolated if I’d grown up 20 years earlier. We are fairly lonesome here in Kentucky. My
parents and I left the rest of our family when we came here and we have very few
friends in Lexington. Technology is the only way we hear from any of our
relatives aside from the few times a year we travel to see them. Mostly we use Facebook,
texting and phone calls, aside from the occasional Skype or email.
If it weren't for these new ways of
communicating we would not have the relationships with our family that we do.
We that we know the little things that go on in their daily lives, I wouldn't have
seen my 2nd cousin’s 1st steps, I wouldn't have been able
to hear about my aunt’s 1st catering job, I wouldn't have been able
to smile at my disabled cousin riding a horse.
Not to say I would miss everything technology
has given me (for example I could do without the play-by-play details of the
healing of my grandmother’s wound ), but overall I think it’s worth sticking it
out here in 2014. Sure there are times when I want to power everything down and
shut these people out of my life, and at I have the option to do that, and I
prefer to have that choice.
